EvaZuSta+: Climate resilient transformation of public (street) space: Evaluation of the “Zukunft Stadtraum” planning competition
Partner(s):Ministry of Regional Identity, Local Government, Building and Digitalization of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MHKBD NRW)
Time frame:01/2024 – 12/2025

The project EvaZuSta+ evaluates pilot projects for the transformation and upgrading of public street space, which are mostly funded during the “Zukunft Stadtraum” urban planning competition. The awarded projects ideas focus on liveable public street spaces that provide safe and sustainable mobility, spaces for social interaction and allow people to benefit from enhanced green infrastructure.

EvaZuSta+ considers the growing complexity of public street space usage and demands. On the one hand, diverging preferences and needs among the population have to be met. On the other hand, it requires the mitigation of the consequences of climate-related events by incorporating more trees and greenery and improving rainwater retention. The creation of multifunctional liveable public spaces improves the quality of stay, possibilities for social interactions and the conditions for sustainable active mobility on foot or by bicycle.

EvaZuSta+ analyses the process and the impact of innovative street redesigns using a before-and-after evaluation design. A mixed methods approach is applied to document the individual projects and assess the effects of the implemented measures. Central elements are on-site surveys, e.g. mapping and photo documentation, analysis of planning documents and qualitative interviews with people involved in the planning process. Additionally, a quantitative survey with residents is conducted in selected cases. A similar approach is planned for the follow-up surveys. The evaluation concludes with a comprehensive interpretation of the results. Through comparative analyses, the project aims to generate further insights into transformation processes. It will give recommendations how the development of sustainable, resilient, and inclusive public street spaces can be supported and which measures are suitable to successfully implement and scale up these transformative urban interventions.
