Time frame: | 09/2023 – 08/2024 |
To achieve a sustainable transformation of urban and regional mobility systems, it is crucial to enhance public transport, serving as the cornerstone of the mobility transition. In the European context, cities like Vienna, Freiburg, and Copenhagen stand out as examples that have acknowledged the significance of integrated urban and transportation development, implementing it effectively in planning. These cities illustrate that by aligning public transportation with urban development, following the principles of 'Transit Oriented Development´, sustainable structures can be established.
The objective of this project, commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment, Nature, and Transportation of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (MUNV NRW), is to advance analyses of public transportation accessibility to identify potentials and deficiencies in North Rhine-Westphalia. The project team utilizes freely available transit feed data to assess the quality and accessibility of public transport stops. In addition to evaluating travel times, the analysis incorporates other criteria such as frequency and mode of transport selection. Utilising GIS-based scenarios to expand and improve public transportation offerings can aid in generating options and recommendations for urban and transportation planning.
