Research projects

The focus of this project is to evaluate the data basis for the sustainability indicator "settlement and transport area development" of the Federal Government. The reorganisation of the cadastral data system into the so-called ALKIS system in Germany has allegedly caused inconsistencies in the time series in recent years. These inconsistencies are subject to be methodical evaluations in this project.

In the first 12 months of the project, ILS will conduct an international comparative study of monitoring systems on this topic.

We will analyse relevant international studies and reports for further evaluation, that interpret land use changes in Germany for policy-makers based on this cadastral data. The focus is on policy advice relating to the United Nations' global sustainability goals (SDGs) or the German sustainability strategy. Such statements can be expected in studies that analyse land use (land take), sealing, land cover, brownfield revitalization, land management, indicator concepts, resource efficiency and urban sprawl. Three particularly important reports will be analysed in detail. The key question is: Has data sourced from cadastral information in Germany and its federal states been incorporated into such studies? Are the analysis results reliable and suitable to support the purpose of the respective study and the statements made?
