Research projects

Today, living in the city is faced with many environmental, economic and social challenges, such as the ongoing climate change, an increasing exposure of motorized traffic, noise and land consumption. But also the demographic change and the juxtaposition of growth and shrinkage have to be overcome.

How can cities and neighborhoods be developed sustainably and future-oriented? How can different, partly contradictory needs and requirements between ecology - high energy standards - economy - more commercial - and social - affordable housing be taken into account? What is the role of the different actors in the discussion about sustainability and quality of urban life?

In the research project TRASIQ, the Science-City Darmstadt (swarm city) is a model for the urban-spatial effects and challenges of continuous population growth and the increase of jobs with the lack of development areas and the planning paradigm of inner-city development.

The research project would like to test the development of sustainable and future-oriented neighborhoods by means of the most important remaining urban development area, the conversion area Cambrai-Fritsch-Kaserne / Jefferson Siedlung. The aim of the project is to discuss current issues of urban development with politicians, citizens and future investors, to find a fair way for as many people as possible and to achieve a truly sustainable urban development. At the end of the project process, a concept is to be put in place that integratively combines different dimensions of urban housing (CO₂-reduced housing, resource-conserving housing, land-saving housing, healthy living, affordable housing as well as sustainable mobility).

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is part of the funding program "Nachhaltige Transformation urbaner Räume” and is coordinated by the Oeko-Institute. Besides the ILS, research and practice partners are the German Institute for Urban Affairs (Difu), as well as the cities of Darmstadt and Griesheim. Furthermore, the project is supported by team ewen and the Schader Foundation in the communication with involved actors.
