Urban research − understanding urban change in its diversity
The process of urbanisation in the early 21st century is enormously dynamic: Urban spaces emerge, grow and change, their transformation takes many forms and is increasingly discontinuous and disparate. A better understanding of these processes is a central concern for the spatial urban researchers at the ILS. We investigate the various dimensions of urban change at different levels of scale and in international comparison. In active dialogue with practitioners, policy-makers and societal stakeholders, we gain important insights from this for the sustainable transformation and design of urban spaces.

Aufbruch in Ückendorf – Exkursion der Forschungsgruppe Sozialraum Stadt
Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf – ein Quartier im Umbruch, das sowohl als Stadtumbau- als auch als städtebauliches Sanierungsgebiet ausgewiesen ist. Ende Mai hat sich die Forschungsgruppe Sozialraum Stadt des ILS auf einer Exkursion dort einen seltenen, aber wirkungsvollen Ansatz der Stadtentwicklung angeschaut: Die Gelsenkirchener Stadterneuerungsgesellschaft kauft gezielt Immobilien auf, saniert sie umfassend – bis hin zur Auswahl der zukünftigen Mieter. ILS-TRENDS 03/25: Wie gut geht es sich in der Stadt? Dortmunder Quartiere im Fokus
Zufußgehen macht vielen Menschen Freude und ist gesund. Trotzdem wird das Zufußgehen als elementarer Bestandteil städtischer Mobilität oft unterschätzt, auch weil im Alltag häufig der Pkw dominiert. Das ILS-TRENDS von Janina Welsch und Anna-Lena van der Vlugt zeigt Ergebnisse aus dem europäischen Forschungsprojekt WalkUrban – Walkable Urban Neighbourhoods, in dem das Zufußgehen in Dortmund, Göteborg (Schweden) und

Urban-rural migration in Germany: A decision in favour of ‘the rural’ or against ‘the urban’?
ILS-Wissenschaftler*innen Frank Osterhage und Cornelia Tippel haben gemeinsam mit weiteren Kolleg*innen einen Artikel im „Journal of Rural Studies“ veröffentlicht. Darin geht es um die Veränderungen der Binnenwanderung zwischen 2000 und 2021 sowie die mittels einer deutschlandweiten Bevölkerungsbefragung ermittelten Gründe, aus denen Haushalte zwischen Mitte 2015 und Mitte 2020 von städtische in ländliche Gebiete umgezogen sind. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jrurstud.2024.103431. From policies to outcomes: multi-level analysis of the influence of regional planning on land take.
Sebastian Eichhorn aus der Forschungsgruppe „Mobilität und Raum“ hat einen Artikel in der Fachzeitschrift „European Planning Studies“ veröffentlicht. Der Beitrag präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Mehrebenenanalyse, mit der die Auswirkungen regionaler Planungsvorschriften und lokaler Interessengruppen auf die Flächeninanspruchnahme für Wohnzwecke unter Berücksichtigung unterschiedlicher Kontextfaktoren untersucht wurden. https://doi.org/10.1080/09654313.2024.2412216. Residential self-selection and the relative importance of travel considerations in the residential choice of a car-reduced neighbourhood
Thomas Klinger from the research group “Mobility and Space”, together with Marcus Klein and Martin Lanzendorf from the University of Frankfurt, has published an article in the journal “Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice”. It deals with residential self-selection (RSS) when moving to car-reduced neighbourhoods and the importance of travel considerations in residential location choice (TCRC). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tra.2024.104266. Practising urban agriculture positively influences household organic waste management habits: A quantitative study from Florianópo-lis, Brazil
Together with colleagues from the FoodE consortium, ILS scientist Kathrin Specht has published an article on the topic of “urban agriculture” in the journal “Waste Management & Research”. Based on a quantitative study from Florianópolis (Brazil), the article shows that urban agriculture has a positive effect on the behaviour of households when disposing of organic waste. https://doi.org/10.1177/0734242X241271025. Action, Property and Beauty. Planning with and for Emergent Urban Complexity
ILS researcher Stefano Cozzolino, together with Stefano Moroni from the Polytechnic University of Milan, has published a book that explores the challenges and potential of complex and emergent urban systems. It takes a new perspective on the topics of emergence, complexity and self-organisation and shows their intertwining with other concepts such as property and beauty, which are usually considered separately. The book explores and untangles these crucial topics in a compact and accessible way, offering new interdisciplinary perspectives on the themes of action and interaction, self-organisation, property, neighbourhood adaptability, urban beauty, and suitable public planning and design interventions. Unter dem Motto „Stadt + Landschaft morgen – sehen, denken, entwerfen“ diskutiert das Forum StadtBauKultur am Montag, 26. Juni, um 19 Uhr im Baukunstarchiv NRW. Im interdisziplinären Kontext des ‚Dortmunder Modells’ an der Fakultät Architektur und Bauingenieurwesen der TU Dortmund fragt die Veranstaltung nach Konstanten, Erweiterungen und Paradigmenwechsel für das architektonische Metier. Wissenschaft zum Anfassen: SUSKULT auf dem Umweltmarkt in Duisburg
Gemüse von der Kläranlage? Das Verbundprojekt SUSKULT erforscht ein neuartiges Agrarsystem, bei dem für die Lebensmittelproduktion notwendige Ressourcen von einer Kläranlage verwendet werden. Das Projekt präsentiert sich am 03. Juni mit einem Stand beim Umweltmarkt in Duisburg. Besucher*innen können sich dort über die nachhaltige urbane Lebensmittelproduktion informieren. Annual conference of the AESOP Thematic Group of Ethics, Values and Planning
Annual conference of the AESOP Thematic Group of Ethics, Values and Planning is themed “Breaking through ‘conformorality’ in urban and regional studies”. It will take place in Dortmund from September 14 to 15, 2023. The conference welcomes contributions that critically discuss conformorality in urban studies and invites scholars to investigate this issue from their own perspectives and experiences. Deadline for submission is June 15, 2023.
