Urban research − understanding urban change in its diversity
The process of urbanisation in the early 21st century is enormously dynamic: Urban spaces emerge, grow and change, their transformation takes many forms and is increasingly discontinuous and disparate. A better understanding of these processes is a central concern for the spatial urban researchers at the ILS. We investigate the various dimensions of urban change at different levels of scale and in international comparison. In active dialogue with practitioners, policy-makers and societal stakeholders, we gain important insights from this for the sustainable transformation and design of urban spaces.

New Professorship through cross-appointment with Osaka University in Japan
From April 2026 Dr. Noriko Otsuka, who is a Senior Research Manager for Research Group Spatial Planning and Urban Design, will be appointed as a Specially Appointed Professor at Osaka University in Japan. Fachforum „Wohnen macht Stadt“: Zukunft großer Siedlungen: Städtebauliche und wohnungswirtschaftliche Herausforderungen im Bestand
Große Siedlungen, wozu Nachkriegssiedlungen der 1950er Jahre in Zeilenbauweise sowie Großwohnsiedlungen aus den 1960er, 1970er und frühen 1980er Jahren zählen, sind unverzichtbarer Bestandteil des Wohnungsangebots in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Sie stehen angesichts demografischer Veränderungen, steigender Anforderungen an Klimaanpassung und energetische Sanierung sowie veränderter Wohnbedürfnisse vor komplexen Herausforderungen. Ihre großmaßstäblichen Strukturen, oft klaren Eigentumsverhältnisse und gewachsenen Nachbarschaften bieten zugleich Chancen, sie als vielfältige, lebenswerte und sozial gerechte Wohnorte weiterzuentwickeln. Beim Fachforum am 20. Mai in Dortmund wollen wir gemeinsam diskutieren, welche politischen, planerischen und wohnungswirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen diese transformative Weiterentwicklung großer Siedlungen ermöglichen, wie Kooperationen zwischen Kommunen, Wohnungsunternehmen und Zivilgesellschaft gelingen können und wie sich Zielkonflikte konstruktiv moderieren lassen. „Agrarsysteme der Zukunft“ und „PlanTieFEn“ beim Zukunftsforum in Berlin
Wie können Konflikte um Landnutzung konstruktiv bearbeitet werden und wie sehen neue Wege für ein vorausschauendes, kooperatives Flächenmanagement aus? Auf dem Zukunftsforum Ländliche Entwicklung des Bundesministeriums für Landwirtschaft, Ernährung und Heimat hatte das Team von „Agrarsysteme der Zukunft“ die Möglichkeit, das Fachforum 28 „Flächen im Wandel“ mitzugestalten – gemeinsam mit dem Öko-Institut, dem Leibniz-Zentrum für Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF), dem Leibniz-Institut für Gemüse- und Zierpflanzenbau (IGZ), neuland21 und der Wüstenrot Stiftung. 100. Promovierenden-Kolloquium am ILS
Mit dem 100. Promovierenden-Kolloquium feierte das ILS am 13. Januar 2026 ein besonderes Jubiläum . Seit 2009 ist das regelmäßig stattfindende Kolloquium ein zentraler Baustein der Nachwuchsförderung am ILS und bietet Promovierenden einen Raum für Austausch, Diskussion und wissenschaftliche Weiterqualifizierung.Das Promovierenden-Kolloquium ist Teil der umfassenden Bemühungen des ILS, seine Promovierenden bestmöglich zu unterstützen. Dabei entstehen die meisten Promotionen im Zuge der Forschungsarbeiten am ILS. Neben dem Kolloquium werden die Promovierenden auch individuell begleitet, unter anderem über Promovierendenvereinbarungen und weitere Unterstützungsangebote. Zur Meldung
Identifikation als Motor? Städtebauliches Kolloquium diskutiert neue Formen des Stadtumbaus
Innovative Wege der Stadtentwicklung und des Stadtumbaus standen in diesem Wintersemester im Mittelpunkt des Städtebaulichen Kolloquiums an der Fakultät für Architektur der RWTH Aachen. Urban-rural migration in Germany: A decision in favour of ‘the rural’ or against ‘the urban’?
ILS-Wissenschaftler*innen Frank Osterhage und Cornelia Tippel haben gemeinsam mit weiteren Kolleg*innen einen Artikel im „Journal of Rural Studies“ veröffentlicht. Darin geht es um die Veränderungen der Binnenwanderung zwischen 2000 und 2021 sowie die mittels einer deutschlandweiten Bevölkerungsbefragung ermittelten Gründe, aus denen Haushalte zwischen Mitte 2015 und Mitte 2020 von städtische in ländliche Gebiete umgezogen sind. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jrurstud.2024.103431. From policies to outcomes: multi-level analysis of the influence of regional planning on land take.
Sebastian Eichhorn aus der Forschungsgruppe „Mobilität und Raum“ hat einen Artikel in der Fachzeitschrift „European Planning Studies“ veröffentlicht. Der Beitrag präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Mehrebenenanalyse, mit der die Auswirkungen regionaler Planungsvorschriften und lokaler Interessengruppen auf die Flächeninanspruchnahme für Wohnzwecke unter Berücksichtigung unterschiedlicher Kontextfaktoren untersucht wurden. https://doi.org/10.1080/09654313.2024.2412216. Residential self-selection and the relative importance of travel considerations in the residential choice of a car-reduced neighbourhood
Thomas Klinger from the research group “Mobility and Space”, together with Marcus Klein and Martin Lanzendorf from the University of Frankfurt, has published an article in the journal “Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice”. It deals with residential self-selection (RSS) when moving to car-reduced neighbourhoods and the importance of travel considerations in residential location choice (TCRC). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tra.2024.104266. Practising urban agriculture positively influences household organic waste management habits: A quantitative study from Florianópo-lis, Brazil
Together with colleagues from the FoodE consortium, ILS scientist Kathrin Specht has published an article on the topic of “urban agriculture” in the journal “Waste Management & Research”. Based on a quantitative study from Florianópolis (Brazil), the article shows that urban agriculture has a positive effect on the behaviour of households when disposing of organic waste. https://doi.org/10.1177/0734242X241271025. Action, Property and Beauty. Planning with and for Emergent Urban Complexity
ILS researcher Stefano Cozzolino, together with Stefano Moroni from the Polytechnic University of Milan, has published a book that explores the challenges and potential of complex and emergent urban systems. It takes a new perspective on the topics of emergence, complexity and self-organisation and shows their intertwining with other concepts such as property and beauty, which are usually considered separately. The book explores and untangles these crucial topics in a compact and accessible way, offering new interdisciplinary perspectives on the themes of action and interaction, self-organisation, property, neighbourhood adaptability, urban beauty, and suitable public planning and design interventions. Die Forschenden und Praxispartner*innen des Modellvorhabens “MOST RegioKöln – Mobilstationen in der Stadtregion Köln” haben sich intensiv mit Mobilstationen als intermodale Schnittstellen im Umweltverbund auseinandergesetzt. Das Projekt hat die Bedarfe der Nutzer*innen und Anwohner*innen beleuchtet, das Potenzial für die Verlagerung vom privaten Pkw auf den Umweltverbund abgeschätzt und innovative Elemente von Mobilstationen analysiert. Spatial Science Colloquium 2023 – Spatial Development and Digitalisation: Interactions, trends and future pathways
Save the date: The Spatial Science Colloquium will take place on July 4 (online) and July 5 in Berlin. The process of digitization leads to far-reaching changes in society. This is linked to various and sometimes contradictory expectations, hopes and fears with regard to spatial development. After approximately two decades of scientific debates and political strategies on digitization at all levels an interim conclusion on intensive interactions between digitization and spatial development seems urgently needed.
