Urban research − understanding urban change in its diversity
The process of urbanisation in the early 21st century is enormously dynamic: Urban spaces emerge, grow and change, their transformation takes many forms and is increasingly discontinuous and disparate. A better understanding of these processes is a central concern for the spatial urban researchers at the ILS. We investigate the various dimensions of urban change at different levels of scale and in international comparison. In active dialogue with practitioners, policy-makers and societal stakeholders, we gain important insights from this for the sustainable transformation and design of urban spaces.

IGA 2027: Impulse für Wirtschaft, Tourismus und Stadtentwicklung
Die Internationale Gartenausstellung 2027 ist ein zentrales Zukunftsprojekt für das Ruhrgebiet. Sie soll weit über gärtnerische Gestaltung hinaus Impulse für Wirtschaft, Tourismus und Stadtentwicklung setzen. Überall im Ruhrgebiet laufen die Vorbereitungen – und viele Akteure fragen sich, was sie beitragen können. Am 31. Oktober lud die IHK zu Dortmund Unternehmer*innen ein, um über wirtschaftliche Potenziale der IGA zu sprechen. Visiting researcher from Italy at ILS
The ILS is pleased to welcome the student Nicole Passoni from the University of Bergamo (Italy). During her stay, she will critically analyse the urban regeneration strategies and the design of the Dortmunder Hafenquartier and Phoenix-See. Her research, supervised by Stefano Cozzolino (ILS) and Emanuele Garda (University of Bergamo), represents an important collaboration between the two institutions.
Das ILS beim Dortmunder Forum Stadtbaukultur
Die ILS-Wissenschaftler*innen Dr. Shaojuan Xu und Dr. Bastian Heider haben am 27. Oktober die Ergebnisse des Projekts CATCH4D im Dortmunder Rathaus präsentiert. Dabei wurden unter anderem die 3D-Wärmelandkarte des Dortmunder Stadtgebiets und ein 3D-Schattensimulationstool zur Analyse urbaner Hitzebelastung vorgestellt. Vom Projektpartner, dem Umweltamt Dortmund, gab es von Sophie Arens Informationen zum Durchgrünungskonzept der Stadt Dortmund. ILS-TRENDS [EXTRA] 04/25: Geodaten für das Klima – Neue Ansätze transformativer Forschung
Die Zukunftsfähigkeit urbaner Räume entscheidet sich daran, wie entschlossen Städte heute auf die Doppelherausforderung von Klimaschutz und Klimaanpassung reagieren. Die Erschließung und Verknüpfung neuartiger (Geo-)Datenpotenziale und partizipativer Werkzeuge ermöglicht es Städten, Entscheidungs- und Planungsprozesse zu unterstützen, zu evaluieren und transparenter zu gestalten. Ein Team des ILS stellt im aktuellen ILS-TRENDS [EXTRA] die Ergebnisse des Projekts CATCH4D vor, das sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, den Klimaschutz und die Klimaanpassung der Stadt Dortmund mit einer innovativen Kombination aus datenbasierten Tools und konkreten Beteiligungsaktionen voranzutreiben. Wohnen macht Stadt: (Neues) Wohnen in Zentren
Innenstädte stehen angesichts tiefgreifender struktureller Veränderungen unter erheblichem Druck: Der Bedeutungsverlust des stationären Einzelhandels infolge des Onlinehandels, zunehmende Leerstände, das Verschwinden großer Warenhäuser und ein verändertes Mobilitätsverhalten stellen Kommunen vor komplexe Herausforderungen. Gleichzeitig entstehen neue Spielräume für die Umnutzung zentral gelegener Immobilien und Flächen. Gefragt sind stadtentwicklungspolitische Ansätze, die urbane Zentren als vielfältige, lebenswerte (Wohn-)Räume jenseits rein konsumorientierter Nutzungen neu denken. Beim Fachforum am 11. From policies to outcomes: multi-level analysis of the influence of regional planning on land take.
Sebastian Eichhorn aus der Forschungsgruppe „Mobilität und Raum“ hat einen Artikel in der Fachzeitschrift „European Planning Studies“ veröffentlicht. Der Beitrag präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Mehrebenenanalyse, mit der die Auswirkungen regionaler Planungsvorschriften und lokaler Interessengruppen auf die Flächeninanspruchnahme für Wohnzwecke unter Berücksichtigung unterschiedlicher Kontextfaktoren untersucht wurden. https://doi.org/10.1080/09654313.2024.2412216. Residential self-selection and the relative importance of travel considerations in the residential choice of a car-reduced neighbourhood
Thomas Klinger from the research group “Mobility and Space”, together with Marcus Klein and Martin Lanzendorf from the University of Frankfurt, has published an article in the journal “Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice”. It deals with residential self-selection (RSS) when moving to car-reduced neighbourhoods and the importance of travel considerations in residential location choice (TCRC). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tra.2024.104266. Practising urban agriculture positively influences household organic waste management habits: A quantitative study from Florianópo-lis, Brazil
Together with colleagues from the FoodE consortium, ILS scientist Kathrin Specht has published an article on the topic of “urban agriculture” in the journal “Waste Management & Research”. Based on a quantitative study from Florianópolis (Brazil), the article shows that urban agriculture has a positive effect on the behaviour of households when disposing of organic waste. https://doi.org/10.1177/0734242X241271025. Action, Property and Beauty. Planning with and for Emergent Urban Complexity
ILS researcher Stefano Cozzolino, together with Stefano Moroni from the Polytechnic University of Milan, has published a book that explores the challenges and potential of complex and emergent urban systems. It takes a new perspective on the topics of emergence, complexity and self-organisation and shows their intertwining with other concepts such as property and beauty, which are usually considered separately. The book explores and untangles these crucial topics in a compact and accessible way, offering new interdisciplinary perspectives on the themes of action and interaction, self-organisation, property, neighbourhood adaptability, urban beauty, and suitable public planning and design interventions. The decommodifying capacity of tenancy law: comparative analysis of tenants’ and landlords’ rights in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland
Michael Kolocek aus der Forschungsgruppe „Sozialraum Stadt“ hat gemeinsam mit Gabriela Debrunner (ETH Zürich) und Arthur Schindelegger (TU Wien) einen Artikel im „International Journal of Housing Policy“ veröffentlicht. In dem Artikel untersuchen die Autor*innen das Mietrecht der Länder Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz und setzen sich hierbei kritisch mit dem Konzept der Dekommodifizierung auseinander. https://doi.org/10.1080/19491247.2024.2367835. Der Beitrag von Mobilstationen für eine regionale Verkehrswende: Abschlussveranstaltung des Projekts „MOST Regio Köln”
Die Forschenden und Praxispartner*innen des Modellvorhabens “MOST RegioKöln – Mobilstationen in der Stadtregion Köln” haben sich intensiv mit Mobilstationen als intermodale Schnittstellen im Umweltverbund auseinandergesetzt. Das Projekt hat die Bedarfe der Nutzer*innen und Anwohner*innen beleuchtet, das Potenzial für die Verlagerung vom privaten Pkw auf den Umweltverbund abgeschätzt und innovative Elemente von Mobilstationen analysiert.
