Urban research − understanding urban change in its diversity
The process of urbanisation in the early 21st century is enormously dynamic: Urban spaces emerge, grow and change, their transformation takes many forms and is increasingly discontinuous and disparate. A better understanding of these processes is a central concern for the spatial urban researchers at the ILS. We investigate the various dimensions of urban change at different levels of scale and in international comparison. In active dialogue with practitioners, policy-makers and societal stakeholders, we gain important insights from this for the sustainable transformation and design of urban spaces.

Share4Equity-Video – Projekt erforscht Mobilitätsgerechtigkeit und Sharing Dienste
Verschiedene Sharing-Dienste für Pkw, Fahrrad oder E-Scooter werden bereits in vielen Städten angeboten, konzentrieren sich dabei jedoch häufig auf die Innenstädte und sind nicht für alle Bewohnende zugänglich. Im Anfang des Jahres gestarteten Projekt „Share4Equity – Shared mobility services towards equitable and sustainable mobilities“ forschen Partner aus den vier europäischen Ländern Deutschland, Schweden, Italien und Polen und aus Kanada zusammen zum Thema Mobilitätsgerechtigkeit und Sharing Dienste. Das vom ILS koordinierte Projekt untersucht, wie Sharing-Dienste verteilt sind, welche Gruppen derzeit besonders davon profitieren (könnten), wie sich informelle Sharing Angebote wie z.B. Fahrgemeinschaften mit bestehenden Angeboten kombinieren lassen und ob und wie Kommunen und Anbieter zu einer gerechteren Mobilität beitragen können. Details dazu gibt es in einem aktuellen Video. Leerstandsentwicklung im Ruhrgebiet
Am 17. September fand das 12. Treffen der Arbeitsgruppe Ladenumnutzung als Exkursion im Ruhrgebiet statt. Veranstaltet von ILS und MHKBD nahmen Vertreter*innen aus 17 Modellkommunen und den Bezirksregierungen aus NRW teil. Stationen in den Innenstädten von Wanne-Eickel, Gelsenkirchen und Essen boten Einblicke in Strategien, Projekte und Beispiele zur Umnutzung von Ladenlokalen – von Stadterneuerung über Leerstandsaktivierung bis zu kreativen Neunutzungen. Der Austausch vor Ort stärkte die Vernetzung der Kommunen und zeigte praxisnah auf, wie Innenstadtbereiche zukunftsfähig gestaltet werden können. Mehr…
Europäisches Forschungsprojekt STARTUP tagt in Dortmund
Vom 8. bis 10. September 2025 war Dortmund Gastgeber eines internationalen Treffens im Rahmen des europäischen Forschungsprojekts STARTUP, an dem auch das ILS beteiligt ist. Rund 30 Gäste aus sieben Ländern kamen in die Werkhalle des Union-Gewerbehofs, um zentrale Fragen der Projektarbeit zu diskutieren und Dortmunder Beispiele der Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft kennenzulernen. Vernetzung zum Rheinischen Revier
Wie gelingt der Strukturwandel? Vertreter*innen der JRF-Institute AMO, EWI, FiW, ILS, IUTA und Wuppertal Institut sowie der JRF-Geschäftsstelle besuchten vergangene Woche die Zukunftsagentur Rheinisches Revier im Brainergy Park Jülich. Mit Bodo Middeldorf, Elke Hohmann und Henrik Suder von der Zukunftsagentur stand ein intensiver Austausch auf dem Programm – von den vielfältigen Beiträgen der JRF-Institute im Strukturwandel bis hin zu aktuellen Themen wie dem Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA) und der Bewerbung des Rheinischen Reviers. Abschlussbericht: Innovative, nachhaltige Mobilitätskonzepte in Neubausiedlungen und Konversionsflächen
Was sind die Chancen und Hemmnissen der autoreduzierten Quartiersentwicklung? Der Abschlussbericht des vom BMBF geförderten Projektes „Nachhaltige Mobilität in Lincoln II (NaMoLi II): Implementierung innovativer nachhaltiger Mobilitätskonzepte in Neubausiedlungen und Konversionsflächen am Beispiel der Lincoln-Siedlung in Darmstadt“ befasst sich genau damit. Residential self-selection and the relative importance of travel considerations in the residential choice of a car-reduced neighbourhood
Thomas Klinger from the research group “Mobility and Space”, together with Marcus Klein and Martin Lanzendorf from the University of Frankfurt, has published an article in the journal “Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice”. It deals with residential self-selection (RSS) when moving to car-reduced neighbourhoods and the importance of travel considerations in residential location choice (TCRC). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tra.2024.104266. Practising urban agriculture positively influences household organic waste management habits: A quantitative study from Florianópo-lis, Brazil
Together with colleagues from the FoodE consortium, ILS scientist Kathrin Specht has published an article on the topic of “urban agriculture” in the journal “Waste Management & Research”. Based on a quantitative study from Florianópolis (Brazil), the article shows that urban agriculture has a positive effect on the behaviour of households when disposing of organic waste. https://doi.org/10.1177/0734242X241271025. Action, Property and Beauty. Planning with and for Emergent Urban Complexity
ILS researcher Stefano Cozzolino, together with Stefano Moroni from the Polytechnic University of Milan, has published a book that explores the challenges and potential of complex and emergent urban systems. It takes a new perspective on the topics of emergence, complexity and self-organisation and shows their intertwining with other concepts such as property and beauty, which are usually considered separately. The book explores and untangles these crucial topics in a compact and accessible way, offering new interdisciplinary perspectives on the themes of action and interaction, self-organisation, property, neighbourhood adaptability, urban beauty, and suitable public planning and design interventions. The decommodifying capacity of tenancy law: comparative analysis of tenants’ and landlords’ rights in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland
Michael Kolocek aus der Forschungsgruppe „Sozialraum Stadt“ hat gemeinsam mit Gabriela Debrunner (ETH Zürich) und Arthur Schindelegger (TU Wien) einen Artikel im „International Journal of Housing Policy“ veröffentlicht. In dem Artikel untersuchen die Autor*innen das Mietrecht der Länder Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz und setzen sich hierbei kritisch mit dem Konzept der Dekommodifizierung auseinander. https://doi.org/10.1080/19491247.2024.2367835. Infilling in German cities. Analysing the extent and spatial distribution of infilling and its effects on housing density between 1991 and 2011. Editorial.
Sebastian Eichhorn aus der Forschungsgruppe „Mobilität und Raum“ hat einen Artikel in der Fachzeitschrift „ERDKUNDE“ veröffentlicht. Der Artikel stellt Ergebnisse zum Ausmaß und zur räumlichen Verteilung von Nachverdichtung in deutschen Städten vor. Mit einem neu entwickelten GIS-basierten Algorithmus und kleinräumigen Daten zur Wohnbautätigkeit (100x100m Rasterzellen) und zur bebauten Fläche wurde analysiert, wie sich die Wohnbebauung in 30 deutschen Fallstudien über einen Untersuchungszeitraum von 1991 bis 2011 entwickelt hat. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Nachverdichtung in den meisten Fallstudien seit den 1990er-Jahren angestrebt und umgesetzt wurde. Es wird jedoch deutlich, dass es große Unterschiede im Ausmaß der Nachverdichtung gibt und dass sie nicht unbedingt zu einer Erhöhung der Wohndichte führt. https://doi.org/10.3112/erdkunde.2024.02.03. Der Beitrag von Mobilstationen für eine regionale Verkehrswende: Abschlussveranstaltung des Projekts „MOST Regio Köln”
Die Forschenden und Praxispartner*innen des Modellvorhabens “MOST RegioKöln – Mobilstationen in der Stadtregion Köln” haben sich intensiv mit Mobilstationen als intermodale Schnittstellen im Umweltverbund auseinandergesetzt. Das Projekt hat die Bedarfe der Nutzer*innen und Anwohner*innen beleuchtet, das Potenzial für die Verlagerung vom privaten Pkw auf den Umweltverbund abgeschätzt und innovative Elemente von Mobilstationen analysiert. Spatial Science Colloquium 2023 – Spatial Development and Digitalisation: Interactions, trends and future pathways
Save the date: The Spatial Science Colloquium will take place on July 4 (online) and July 5 in Berlin. The process of digitization leads to far-reaching changes in society. This is linked to various and sometimes contradictory expectations, hopes and fears with regard to spatial development. After approximately two decades of scientific debates and political strategies on digitization at all levels an interim conclusion on intensive interactions between digitization and spatial development seems urgently needed.
