Urban research − understanding urban change in its diversity
The process of urbanisation in the early 21st century is enormously dynamic: Urban spaces emerge, grow and change, their transformation takes many forms and is increasingly discontinuous and disparate. A better understanding of these processes is a central concern for the spatial urban researchers at the ILS. We investigate the various dimensions of urban change at different levels of scale and in international comparison. In active dialogue with practitioners, policy-makers and societal stakeholders, we gain important insights from this for the sustainable transformation and design of urban spaces.
We have three main research interests.

Neue Impulse für die soziale Wohnraumversorgung
Besuch aus der Bundespolitik: Die Parlamentarische Staatssekretärin im Bundesministerium für Wohnen, Stadtentwicklung und Bauwesen (BMWSB), Sabine Poschmann, hat heute (1. Die Landwirtschaft von morgen auf der Internationalen Gartenausstellung entdecken
Die „Agrarsysteme der Zukunft“ sind eines von 30 Zukunftsprojekten, die während einer Ausstellung in den Zukunftsgärten zur Internationalen Gartenausstellung (IGA) 2027 im Ruhrgebiet vorgestellt werden. Diese Entscheidung wurde am vergangenen Donnerstag (28. August) beim Regionalen Forum der IGA im Deutschen Bergbaumuseum Bochum bekannt gegeben. ILS-JOURNAL 02/25 erschienen
Die aktuelle Ausgabe befasst sich im Titelthema mit dem Forschungsfeld der „StadtGesundheit“ (Urban Health). Ziel des Forschungsfeldes ist es gesunde und gerechte Lebensverhältnisse in Städten zu schaffen, mit dem Anspruch bestehende soziale Ungleichheiten zu erkennen und ihnen gezielt entgegenzuwirken. Das Heft stellt die ILS Forschung aus diesem Bereich vor. Wie das Thema „Stadtgesundheit“ nicht nur in der Wissenschaft, sondern auch in der Praxis mehr Aufmerksamkeit bekommt, darüber spricht Klaus Völkel, Leiter der Stabsstelle Arbeit, Gesundheitswirtschaft, Technologietransfer, Universitätsentwicklung bei der Stadt Witten, im Interview. ILS unterzeichnet Positionspapier „Zusammenhalt statt Hetze“
Gemeinsam mit 25 anderen zivilgesellschaftlichen und wissenschaftlichen Organisationen aus Nordrhein-Westfalen, veröffentlichte das ILS heute ein gemeinsames Positionspapier, das konkrete Ansätze für mehr gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt und die Stärkung demokratischer Strukturen benennt. Im Hinblick auf anstehende Wahlen wird mit dem Papier ein wichtiges Zeichen für Demokratie und Vielfalt gesetzt. Mehr…

Action, Property and Beauty. Planning with and for Emergent Urban Complexity
ILS researcher Stefano Cozzolino, together with Stefano Moroni from the Polytechnic University of Milan, has published a book that explores the challenges and potential of complex and emergent urban systems. It takes a new perspective on the topics of emergence, complexity and self-organisation and shows their intertwining with other concepts such as property and beauty, which are usually considered separately. The book explores and untangles these crucial topics in a compact and accessible way, offering new interdisciplinary perspectives on the themes of action and interaction, self-organisation, property, neighbourhood adaptability, urban beauty, and suitable public planning and design interventions. The decommodifying capacity of tenancy law: comparative analysis of tenants’ and landlords’ rights in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland
Michael Kolocek aus der Forschungsgruppe „Sozialraum Stadt“ hat gemeinsam mit Gabriela Debrunner (ETH Zürich) und Arthur Schindelegger (TU Wien) einen Artikel im „International Journal of Housing Policy“ veröffentlicht. In dem Artikel untersuchen die Autor*innen das Mietrecht der Länder Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz und setzen sich hierbei kritisch mit dem Konzept der Dekommodifizierung auseinander. https://doi.org/10.1080/19491247.2024.2367835. Infilling in German cities. Analysing the extent and spatial distribution of infilling and its effects on housing density between 1991 and 2011. Editorial.
Sebastian Eichhorn aus der Forschungsgruppe „Mobilität und Raum“ hat einen Artikel in der Fachzeitschrift „ERDKUNDE“ veröffentlicht. Der Artikel stellt Ergebnisse zum Ausmaß und zur räumlichen Verteilung von Nachverdichtung in deutschen Städten vor. Mit einem neu entwickelten GIS-basierten Algorithmus und kleinräumigen Daten zur Wohnbautätigkeit (100x100m Rasterzellen) und zur bebauten Fläche wurde analysiert, wie sich die Wohnbebauung in 30 deutschen Fallstudien über einen Untersuchungszeitraum von 1991 bis 2011 entwickelt hat. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Nachverdichtung in den meisten Fallstudien seit den 1990er-Jahren angestrebt und umgesetzt wurde. Es wird jedoch deutlich, dass es große Unterschiede im Ausmaß der Nachverdichtung gibt und dass sie nicht unbedingt zu einer Erhöhung der Wohndichte führt. https://doi.org/10.3112/erdkunde.2024.02.03. Gesetzliche Regelungen zur finanziellen Beteiligung der Gemeinden und Anwohner am Ausbau erneuerbarer Energien

Spatial Science Colloquium 2023 – Spatial Development and Digitalisation: Interactions, trends and future pathways
Save the date: The Spatial Science Colloquium will take place on July 4 (online) and July 5 in Berlin. The process of digitization leads to far-reaching changes in society. This is linked to various and sometimes contradictory expectations, hopes and fears with regard to spatial development. After approximately two decades of scientific debates and political strategies on digitization at all levels an interim conclusion on intensive interactions between digitization and spatial development seems urgently needed. Creating New Opportunities in Rural Areas: Course of the TU Delft in the context of the project Ruralization
